My friend Brie is a woman of many talents. She’s a great speaker, leader, and mom. She is also hilarious. Among other things, she is a planner.
Although she plans well, she does not execute well.
Being a leader, Brie is often busy with different projects. All these distractions steal her focus. Ultimately, her progress is often compromised.
I’ve warned her many times, but she still overcommits herself to too many things. These are self-sabotaging habits.
Are you like Brie? Do you have self-sabotaging habits too?
The Israelites did too!
In Joshua 5:6, the Israelites got out of Egypt, but they did not step into the Promised Land.
Because they engaged in self-sabotaging habits that ultimately diverted their attention, they doubted God and Moses’ Leadership. They idolized the Golden Calf. They didn’t want to be content with God’s provisions, continually asking for more.
Getting over a Self-Sabotaging Lifestyle
God blesses your steps.
But just because He blessed your step one, doesn’t necessarily mean He will bless step two.
God can take away blessings just as He gave them to you.
Always be grateful for what you have. Gratitude grows you.
Honor God with the things you do. Thank God for the things He has given you.
the Trick to Identifying Self-Sabotaging Habits
To get over a self-sabotaging lifestyle, you first need to recognize which ones are they.
These are habits that steal excessive time away. They hinder you from achieving your God-given dreams. Here are five examples of self-sabotaging patterns:
- Excessive time chasing Korean dramas
- Too much time playing games
- Too much eating
- Focusing too much on money
The key to identifying self-sabotaging habits is that they are excessive and unhealthy. Sometimes, they are only harmful in excess. Other times, they are destructive in general.
Eliminate These Self-Sabotaging Habits
Now, I’m not saying to never watch TV again, or game again. (That would be hypocritical. I love binging TV shows. Any Whovians or #TWDFamily out there?)
Yet, I don’t spend every day watching them. I only watch in moderation and if I have absolutely nothing to do.
It’s time to replace it with healthier things such as exercising or meeting up with a friend for a chat. We have the free will to choose to uphold our end of the agreement, as does God.
Of course, nobody is perfect. We need to be lenient with ourselves and start with baby steps. But leniency does not mean indifference. Discipline is key!
