A Better You: Overbearing Burdens – Joshua 3:5

Song: The Heart of Worship by UPPERROOM

As the Word of God is a living text, people have different ways of interpreting these texts. So, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions down in the comments below! Remember to like and share on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

“6 Joshua said to the priests, ‘Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.’ So they took it up and went ahead of them.”

– Joshua 3:6 NIV

When the priests picked up the ark of the covenant across the river, they did something symbolic – they carried God with them through the troubles.

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.”

– Matthew 14:24-27 NIV

In the book of Matthew, Jesus talks about true discipleship which is to carry up the cross and follow Him.

Similarly, we have to pick up God when we’re in an emotional crisis.

When I say picking up god, it doesn’t mean you are bigger than God and therefore you can pick Him up. Picking up God, in one sense, means to pick up what God has in store for you.

In order to get what God has in store for you, you need to pick up your load.

But, the only way to get what God has for you is to cross the river.

Something that’s easy is rarely worth working for.

Therefore, you have to do this. You have to carry your load.

What to Do When Your Burdens Get Too Heavy?

Have you ever lifted weights? Have you ever worked out? Heck, have you ever done a push-up?

You probably have. If you haven’t, you can (and should) try to do a couple right now.

It’s known for a fact that the more push-ups you do, the more tired you feel.

That’s only common sense.

When you’re carrying your load, it gets heavy. It’s inevitable. Ask anyone who follows God, ask anyone who’s successful by the world’s standards, the load will get heavy one day.

Yet, the difference between us and secular people is that our God will be there to share the burdens with us. But, this is only when you carry God when carrying your load.

When You Don’t Feel God

Sometimes, when you feel the load gets too heavy to handle, and you’re trying to hold onto it in front of everyone who told you you can’t do it, drop it.

Why drop it?

Because dropping it means you trust God will catch you. God won’t let your progress go to waste

Ironic, isn’t it?

Doesn’t it make more sense to hold onto your load to demonstrate your faith? Pushing yourself over your limit to show God is a very conventional way of thinking.

It’s toxic.

It not only instills dread now, but it will also deter you from committing to God in the future.

God doesn’t care how long you pretend to keep it all together, God only cares if you want to live righteously for Him.

Prophetic Word

Some of you are afraid of picking up new commitments and responsibilities for God because of your past bad experiences. I believe in you and that you are strong enough to pick it up. If I, someone who doesn’t know you, believe in you, how much more does God?

Another group of you may be feeling the weight of the load is getting too heavy. Don’t worry! God is in the load.

Call to Action

Repeat this to yourself when you’re feeling afraid of your future:

God is in the load, no matter how boring and painful it is. God will bless this.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

– Romans 8:28 NIV

God bless you and pick up your load!
